From January 17th to 19th, 2025, Ushindi Retreat Camp brought together intersex persons, transgender, and gender non-conforming (GNC) Muslims for a transformative experience of faith, self-acceptance, and community building. This year marked Phase Two of the retreat, following the success of our first phase last year. With the official launch of Ushindi Retreat Camp under Intersex Rights Initiative Coast Kenya, we aim to establish it as a continuous program to support spiritual and personal growth for Gender and sexual minority individuals.
A SPACE FOR FAITH, AUTHENTICITY, AND JOY.
The retreat provided a sacred space where participants could pray together, engage in Maulid, recite the Quran, and reconnect with their faith without fear of discrimination. Through engaging Quran study sessions, we empowered attendees to be grounded in their religion, reminding them that Allah’s love is unconditional.
Beyond spiritual growth, the Ushindi Retreat Camp embraced authentic self-expression. We held modelling sessions where participants could cross-dress and fully embrace their identities. There was also dancing to Quran songs, creating a joyous and affirming environment. Bonfire storytelling and reflections brought deep connections, as participants shared their journeys, engaged in case studies, and received guidance from certified counselors to help navigate their experiences.
A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN INITIATIVE.
The official launch of the Ushindi Retreat Camp was graced by local leaders, religious leaders, policymakers, community members, allies, board members, and partners. Their presence reaffirmed the growing support for inclusive spaces where GSM individuals can thrive spiritually and socially.
