Our Story

Founded in 2022, the Intersex Liberty Initiative Coast (ILIC) is dedicated to addressing the social and cultural barriers that intersex individuals face in accessing Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR). Recognizing the lack of inclusivity and recognition for intersex persons, ILIC strives to empower individuals, advocate for their rights, and amplify their voices through various interventions that foster social justice and acceptance. Based in Kilifi County, ILIC operates as a non-profit and non-partisan organization.
In 2017, following the report of a task force on policy, legal, institutional, and administrative reforms regarding intersex individuals in Kenya, the Attorney General appointed this task force to evaluate the circumstances surrounding intersex persons and to provide recommendations for addressing their challenges. The constitutional framework of Kenya, particularly Articles 2, 19, 27, 28, 29, 35, 47, and 53, lays the foundation for recognizing and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of intersex individuals, emphasizing the importance of dignity, social justice, and the realization of potential.
A review of existing sectoral laws has revealed significant legal, institutional, and administrative gaps that do not adequately address the needs and challenges of intersex individuals. Current statutory laws and institutional arrangements within the health, education, employment, civil registration, immigration, and justice sectors are predominantly designed around a binary understanding of gender. In response to these gaps, ILIC was established to provide targeted interventions for the intersex community.
